Emeritus Prof. J.H. Kwabena Nketia (1921–2019) was a legendary Ghanaian composer, musicologist, and academic, widely recognized for his profound contributions to African music scholarship. With over 200 scholarly works and 80+ musical compositions, he held prominent positions globally:
✔ First African Director, Institute of African Studies, University of Ghana
✔ Professor of Music at UCLA, Harvard University, Michigan State University, and University of Pittsburgh
✔ Visiting Professor at prestigious institutions including China Conservatory of Music and University of Queensland
His many honors include the Companion of the Order of the Star of Ghana, the Prince Claus Award, the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award, and the UNESCO IMC Music Prize. Prof. Nketia’s lifelong work continues to shape African music studies and cultural education worldwide.
