Anna Arutunyan
Anna Arutunyan is a Russian-American journalist, author, and commentator on Russian politics and media. She is the author of The Media in Russia (2009) and co-author of Freedom, Repression and Private Property in Russia (2013). Her bylines have appeared in USA Today, The Nation, The Christian Science Monitor, Foreign Policy in Focus, and The Moscow News, where she served as editor and senior correspondent.
Born in the Soviet Union and raised in the United States, Anna returned to Moscow in 2002 to document the country’s shifting political terrain. She has lectured at Tampere University in Finland and Michigan State University, speaking on Russian authoritarianism, media, and society.
Her writing uniquely blends investigative journalism with cultural commentary, offering readers a front-row seat to the Putin era's complexities and contradictions. Anna currently resides in Moscow with her husband and daughter.
