OpenMRS

Open-source electronic medical records system for clinics, hospitals and health programmes, built by a global community.

About OpenMRS

OpenMRS is an open-source electronic medical records (EMR) system built and maintained by a global community of developers, informaticists and health workers. It is used to keep patient records in clinics and hospitals. The project reports more than 8,000 facilities in over 70 countries and about 15 million patient records.

The software is free to use. The project states that there are no licence fees or vendor lock-in, and the source code is open. It can be adapted to local clinical needs, such as primary care, non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health, HIV, TB, malaria and COVID, and it can be translated into other languages.

OpenMRS provides REST and FHIR APIs, which makes it easier to connect with other tools and systems. A public demo of the current 3.x version is available, and the project publishes release notes, a roadmap and documentation.

  • Free and open source, with no licence fees
  • Configurable for different clinical programmes
  • REST and FHIR APIs for integration
  • Translatable into many languages
  • Active community, regular releases and a public demo
